Ringing the bell, without air equals no sound?
When a bell rings is placed in a jar connected to a pump vacuum and air is removed, no sound is heard. Explain.
One would think you would need air to be able to hear the bell, because the vibrations of the bell must be made in our ears for us to perceive, and the air is driving the most common. It is interpreted by our brain by detecting a series of compression waves in our inner ear. Your experience does not work as expected, because the bell in the pot will be subject to gravity, and will probably touch the glass of the bottle. The vibrations of the bell will cause the glass to vibrate, and the glass in turn, because of the air outside the glass to vibrate. That vibration will travel through the air to your ears and you hear the bell, but not as hard as you would have been otherwise.
