Why do they use the number 24 as pure gold?
I realize that it is pure gold, but I do not understand why the number 24 was chosen. Does anyone know why 24 of pure gold and not any number of others: for example 100-carat gold pure. Thank you
The system carat is increasingly supplemented or replaced by the system in which thousandths fine purity of precious metals is designated by thousandths of a pure metal in the alloy. The carat (abbreviation ct or AC) is a measure of the purity of gold alloys. As a purity, one carat is frac (1) (24) purity by weight: X = 24 , frac ((M_M M_g)) where X is the carat rating of the material, Mg is the mass of gold or platinum in the material, and MM is the total mass of material. In the mid-16th century, the carat was adopted as a measure of gold purity, roughly equivalent to the Roman siliqua ( frac (1) (24) of a golden solidus of Constantine I). As far as weight of diamond, 1575 the measure was the Greek equivalent of the Roman siliqua, which was frac (1) (24) of a golden solidus of Constantine, but it was probably never used to measure the weight of gold. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carat_ (purity)
