Plata Pura - Pure Silver
One of the most important and reliable distinguishing marks to be found when you first examine a Silver coin or Bullion bar from a Spanish speaking area of the World are the words 'Plata Pura'. Translated simply as 'Pure Silver' in English, the marking guarantees the fineness of the of the Silver content of the piece as 99.9% pure Silver, as usually confirmed by the legend Ley, or fineness, .999 elsewhere on the coin. With a few exceptions, the vast majority of coins and bars produced bearing ' Plata Pura' will have been produced by the Banco De Mexico, the Mexican Central Bank.
Rich in fine metals Mexico has had a long history of producing Silver and Gold items, first as part of the Spanish Empire and then domestically after the establishment of the Mexican Republic in the 19th Century. Although not of Plata Pura quality some of these early coins contained up to .903 Silver content and can be a good investment in their own right. Although some 'Morelos' coins appear for sale it is really with the 'Libertad' coins produced from 1982 to date that collectors of 'Plata Pura' coins will most familiar.
Produced in a wide range of designs and denominations, from 1/20 of a Troy Ounce or Onza, to 1 kilo, the Mexican Libertad Plata Pura is a favorite amongst collectors. For those more interested in pure investment potential Plata Pura bars are available from both Mexico and some other Spanish speaking areas such as Spain itself and Peru.
