Should I also give a little water to my baby exclusively breastfed?
Well if some family members today I said I would also like to feed my baby water to prevent dehydration. She is 3 months and is only milk breast, it does not take a bottle or formula. They feed 7-10 times a day and since I do not know if it becomes enough, I always ask myself and now I'm afraid she was dehydrated because I did water. Is 2 ounces of water per day fine?
Breastfed babies have not need water - keep in mind that breast milk is 88% water. Even in the first days after birth before the mother's milk is "Come in, colostrum is all that is needed to keep baby well hydrated (assuming baby suckles effectively). By the Academy American Pediatric Society, "Supplements (water, glucose water, formula and other fluids) should not be given to breastfeeding infants unless ordered by a physician when a medical indication exists ... During the first 6 months of age, even in hot climates Water and juice are unnecessary for breastfed infants and may introduce contaminants or allergens. "In addition, breastfed babies have not need water when the outdoor temperature is very hot, assuming baby is allowed to heal if necessary. The baby can get all liquids needed via breastmilk.
