Mexican Peso
Barometer of the Mexican Economy - the Mexican Peso
If a Nation's history could be said to be reflected in its coinage then in many ways the story of the Mexican Silver One Peso coin could be one of the finest examples. The word 'Peso' translates literally to the English word 'Weight' and was used first by the Spanish authorities in what was then New Spain to indicate the amount of gold or silver contained in the coins.
After Mexico gained it's independence in 1821 these coins remained in use until the first of the official new Republic's Peso's were minted between 1867 and 1873. Mexico's vast mineral wealth reserves allowed the new Nation to survive its first turbulent century of revolution and counter revolution so beloved of Hollywood movies. For the modern investor or coin collector this upheaval has led to a sometimes bewildering array of mint marks and coins, with no fewer than 14 mints in operation, as coin production was undertaken by the various provincial authorities.
A brief summary of the Silver One Peso coins produced by Mexico would be a good indicator of the general decline of the Mexican economy during the course of the 20th Century. The 'Cabilotos' peso, is so called because the design featured a horse rider on the reverse, of 1903 to 1914 contained .903 silver. This was followed by the 'Sunray' peso which was first struck in .800 silver during 1918-19, thereafter reduced to .720 silver for the coins minted during the years 1920 to 1945.
During the following decades the fineness of the silver content was steadily reduced, .500 1947-1949, .300 in 1950 and finally .100 for the final coins issued from 1957 until final replacement by the cupro-nickel coin of 1970. For the investor the generally high Fine Silver content of the Mexican Peso make it an attractive addition to their portfolio. For the coin collector the added historical and artistic changes can add to the worth of a collection of Mexican silver One Peso coins.
