The American Gold Eagle
First produced by the United States Mint in 1986, The American Gold Eagle was the only Gold Bullion coin of the United States until it was joined by The American Buffalo 24 carat coin in 2006. By U.S law the Gold content of the coin must be sourced from U.S production. Minted to 22 carat purity the coins contain 91.67% Fine Gold, 3% Silver and 5.33% Copper.
The American Gold Eagle series of coins are offered in four sizes, 1/10th, 1/4, 1/2 and 1 Troy Ounce with corresponding face values of $5, $10, $25 and $50. A Proof version has been produced for coin collectors and investors at the United States Mint at West Point, New York, which can be identified by the W mint mark beneath the date on the coin.
A peculiarity of the coins is that the Gold Eagles minted between the years 1986 and 1991 carried the year of Minting in Roman numerals whilst from 1992 onward the dating on the coins was changed to the more familiar Arabic system. The Obverse design for the coins carries a full length image of Lady Liberty holding the Torch of Liberty in her right hand and an Olive Branch in her left, surmounted by the word 'Liberty' and surrounded by stars representing the U.S States and the date.
The reverse carries the image of a pair of nesting Eagles above which is written ' United States Of America'. To the sides of the Eagles are written 'E Pluribus Unum' and 'In God We Trust'. Around the bottom are marked the weight, 'Fine Gold' and the appropriate Dollar face value.
