Copper Bullion
Investing In Copper Bullion & Coins
Investors and coin collectors alike have seen large rises in the value of precious metals such as Gold and Silver in the last decade with corresponding rises in the value of their collections.
Recently a new niche opportunity has opened up with the rise in the price of the base metal Copper. Once almost a derogatory term for coins on little or no value, Copper bullion has seen it's value rise as it's use in domestic and electrical components has outstripped supply. Copper is one of mankind’s oldest traded metals, in fact it was being worked in Cyprus from at least 3000 B.C to such an extent that the name for the island itself derives from the Greek word for copper.
Copper coins have a long history of use, typically for smaller denominations. From the coins of Antiquity to the 'hard times' coins and talents produced in such times as the English Civil War, American Revolution and the American Civil War a collection of copper or bronze coins can often be more unusual and appealing than those of other metals. For example a collection of Swedish 'Platmynt' or Plate Money will always look impressive. Produced between 1643 and 1768 the 10 Daler piece weighed 44 lb, with other denominations corresponding in size and weight.
The recent rises in the price of copper bullion have led to the situation where many older coins have a value which exceeds the face value of the coin. For example the U.S Cent produced before 1982 was almost 100% copper, before becoming merely copper plated. At this time (spring 2011) the value of the copper contained in these Pennies is about three Cents, or three times the face value of the coin.
Another way to invest in copper bullion is in the form of Bullion Bars. Although without the 'instant profit' benefit of the pre 1982 coins, these have the advantage over coins of being far easier to collect and store in quantity and they come in a range of highly attractive designs.
Whether you are purely an investor or are a coin collector looking to build up a collection in this diverse and widely available medium whilst prices are low, adding copper bullion to your portfolio could be one of the better long term financial investments you could make.
