Canadian Penny
Get Them While You Still Can
- Farewell To The Canadian Penny ?
As I write this in the Spring of 2011 it looks as if the end is nigh for the honest Canadian Penny. First produced at the Royal Mint in London for use in the Canadian provinces in 1858, it was one of a number of coins replacing a range of local bank issue tokens and foreign coins.
The popular name 'Penny' even survived the official name change to Cent for Canada's smallest denominated coin at decimalization in 1858. So what's changed? Basically the two sides of the argument for and against keeping the coin boil down to the increasing cost of producing and distributing the coins versus the public's fears that prices will rise if the Penny is abolished as retailers 'round up' their prices.
Economically the case for abolition seems pretty sound. A report by the Desjardins Group in 2007 estimated that over 20 Billion Canadian Pennies had been produced to date. However because the vast majority had ended up filling bottles and jars or were just discarded, the Royal Canadian Mint is obliged to keep producing them at a rate of 816 million per year at a cost of C$130 million.
On the 14th December 2010 the Senate Finance Committee found that considering it cost the Government .5c to produce and 3c to distribute it would recommend that the 1c coin be removed from circulation. If you are a Numismatist now would be the time to collect these coins whilst they are still abundant. Covering the entire time span of official Canadian coinage, in addition to those produced by pre-confederation provinces, a collection of 1c coins quickly builds to a large and inexpensive collection.
Many investors see copper increasing in value in the medium term in a similar way to that of gold and silver during the last decade. When first produced, from 1858 until 1941, the Penny and one Cent coins contained 95% copper. This actually increased to 98% copper content in the coins produced between 1942 and 1999. Whether you are a coin collector or an investor, now could be a good time to lay in a collection of Canadian Pennies.
