American Buffalo
The American Buffalo Gold Coin
One of the most recent additions to the World of Gold coin collecting for the Numismatist and Fine Metal Investor has been the American Buffalo series of coins. The $50 coin was first Minted in 2006 in response to the increasing market share in being taken by the new 24 Carat Gold coins produced by some Foreign Mints such as the Canadian Maple Leaf and the Australian Gold Nugget.
In fact the World market share taken by 24 Carat .9999% Gold coins is now in the region of 60%, a figure which was making the American Eagle series of 22 Carat, 91.67% Fine Gold content coins, increasingly unattractive to the Investor.
The United States Mint based the design for the new coin on the classic Indian Head Nickel, designed by James Earle Fraser in 1913.
The Obverse carries the image of a Native American head in profile along with the date of issue and the word 'Liberty'. The reverse of the coin has the image of an American Bison, commonly referred to as a Buffalo, along with the denomination, 1oz .9999 Fine Gold and the motto ' In God We Trust'. Proof, uncirculated examples, also carry a small 'W' Mint mark denoting the West Point Mint.
The success of the Buffalo prompted the U.S Mint to release $5, $10 and $25 denominations containing 1/10th, 1/4 and 1/2 Troy Ounce .9999 Fine Gold in 2008.
